MAPLEWOOD DEMS SET MEETING TO CHOOSE BROWNLEE REPLACEMENT; SUMMERSGILL WANTS RYAN

Ian Grodman
The Maplewood Democratic Committee will meet on August 17 to discuss the replacement for Township Committee member Marlon Brownlee, who announced his resignation on Tuesday.

Democratic Party Chair Ian Grodman said the committee will meet and vote on three nominees to submit to the TC, which must then choose the Brownlee replacement from that group.

Brownlee had decided not to run for re-election this year, but his departure means a replacement must be chosen.

"Of course we are sorry to see Marlon move on but are grateful for his service, thoughtfulness and ability to always remain a gentleman," Grodman said via email, later adding, "There are many issues related to both governing and politics to discuss before making the decision."

Among those expected to be in the running is Frank McGehee, who won the Democratic primary to replace Brownlee and is facing Republican Mike Summersgill in the Nov. 8 election.

Asked for his reaction to Brownlee's departure, McGehee said via email: "I am out of the country this week on business. I want to join the residences of Maplewood in thanking Marlon for his service to our wonderful community."

Summersgill also offered his thoughts on the departure and its effect on the race in an email statement in which he touted former Mayor Gerry Ryan as a good interim replacement:

I don't think this will have any impact on the campaign. I trust the TC will make a selection with the Town's interests in mind and use this as an opportunity to select the best available Democrat rather than the only Democrat running. I'd like to see someone like Gerry Ryan step in so we have continuity and experience.
My first reaction was disappointment that we were losing Marlon three months before his term was up. I will miss his signature eyebrow raise. Marlon never gave anyone a pass to mislead or misinform even if it would help his own position.

The TC is expected to choose a replacement at its next meeting on Sept. 6.
