POLICE ISSUE MORE DETAILS ON SUNDAY MORNING CARJACKING

We reported this morning that a 13-year-old alleged carjacker had been arrested by Maplewood Police on Sunday. Although the crime occurred in Maplewood, he was taken into custody in Newark.

Maplewood police issued a notice on the incident Monday with further information that indicated the crime occurred on Oakview Avenue at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. A 64-year-old woman was thrown to the ground as she entered her vehicle. The vehicle, a BMW, was stolen along with a cell phone.

On 10/16/16, at approximately 10:15 AM, a black male in his 20’s exited a white vehicle on Oakview Ave and approached a 64 year old resident that was entering her vehicle.  The male grabbed the victim, threw her to the ground and fled in her 2015 BMW X5.  Officers responded to the area and searched for both vehicles unsuccessfully.  The victim was transported to the hospital for evaluation.  Several hours later detectives were able to locate the vehicle in Newark.  While in the area of the carjacked vehicle, Detective Klebaur and Detective Rella observed two males holding an iphone that matched the description of one taken in the robbery.  

The individuals were detained and the iphone was confirmed to be the one taken in the carjacking.  A 13 year old juvenile from Newark was arrested for possession of the stolen phone as well as an outstanding Newark Warrant and the 22 year old male, Justin Knight of Newark was arrested on an outstanding warrant.  The vehicle has been towed to Maplewood Police Headquarters for processing.
